I spent most of today working on projects, Christmas presents to be specific (after a little baking in the morning). Continued with the intense prep work for the sewing projects, and managed to make a stripped infinity scarf & a zippered pouch.
Since the infinity scarf was a repeat project I found it a little less challenging. Well that is after my boyfriend and I teamed up to try to put the sewing machine back together. Oops!
The zippered pouch however had its challenges for a beginner like me. This was my first attempt at a sewing project involving attaching a zipper.
The original pattern comes from
The Noodle Head Blog which I found through Pinterest.
Materials Needed:
* Fabric squares (I used the ones you can buy at Fabricland or Walmart for about $3)
* zipper
* thread
* pins
* scissors
* tape measure
Fabric cuts:
If you are using a 10" zipper - you will need two exterior fabric cuts, and two interior cuts at 10" (w) by 7" (tall). This will make you a small pouch
12" zipper - same as above in 12" (wide) by 9" (tall), for a medium sized pouch.
14" zipper - same as before in 14" (wide) by 11" (tall), for a large pouch.
Choosing the fabrics was the most fun of the whole project! If you haven't already heard of
Vera Bradley check it out. This is my favourite (I repeat, favourite) store in the USA for travel accessories, bags and totes... The fabric is loud, fun and relatively unique if you do not live in the US or shop there regularly as a Canadian. Anywho, since I love Vera Bradley so much, I was inspired while picking the fabric combos for my pouches and tried to pick colours and/or patterns that are similar to Vera Bradley's style.
From what I learned by doing these patterns, it does not hurt to have a little extra fabric on the tall size, you do not want to go too much longer than the zipper because it is tough to sew using the sewing machine to get close enough to the end with the zipper-head.
For a step-by-step tutorial it's best to follow the original blog because it is so well laid out with pictures and all! Click

And here is a great video tutorial by someone different and the outcome ends up looking more like a Stella & Dot poof, a little more boxy than the tutorial above -
StyleNovice
I had a few struggles with one of the last couple of steps when it asks you to make the triangles at the end, trace a line 3.5" in and cut... However after finding the YouTube tutorial listed above, I am ready to try another one to see if it is a little easier than the blog tutorial.
Happy sewing!
